PERFECT DAY ON SAONA ISLAND: A TROPICAL PARADISE EXCURSION
Traveling is about “doing things”, going from place to place, checking off activities, collecting moments, and coming home more tired than when you left. But it’s a feeling that is worth having! Sometimes you look to disconnect yourself from reality, and a Saona Island excursion in the Dominican Republic served up that ideal day trip when nothing was required of me but just to enjoy being in this secluded paradise.
A Popular Destination

The day began with a drive from our hotel in Punta Cana to Bayahibe. When we arrived, the beach was lined with speed boats, fishing boats, and catamarans. Soon, we boarded a catamaran bound for Saona. Along the way, we admired white sand beaches and clear Caribbean waters. Music played, Mama Juana flowed, and we already felt the island’s relaxing vibe.
The Natural Pool: A Crystal Blue Wonder
We stopped in shallow, crystal waters just 100 yards from a perfect line of palm trees. The “pool” was chest-deep, clear enough to see our toes and starfish below.
Snorkeling in Saona’s Natural Pool
We swam and snorkeled in pure bliss, marveling at coral reefs teeming with marine life. Suddenly, one of the crew tapped my shoulder. He balanced cups, soda, and rum. Rum and Cokes in the ocean? Yes, please.
After a while, we climbed back aboard for Saona. On deck, we did nothing, just waves, laughter, breeze, pineapple, and rum. The Caribbean scenery surrounded us like a dream.

Saona Island, named Bella Savonesa by Columbus in 1494, sits just off the Dominican Republic’s southeast tip. It is part of Cotubanamá National Park, which protects its beaches, waters, and palm forests. The beauty looked unreal, as if Photoshop had come alive.
By lunchtime, a feast of lobster, chicken, salad, and vegetables awaited us. We ate, sipped cocktails, and laughed before sinking into beach chairs.
For hours, we played in the waves and napped under palm trees. We let the sounds of nature wash over us. We watched volleyball and buried our feet in soft sand. Then we did nothing and everything, embracing the peace of this Caribbean haven.
Too soon, it was time to leave our island paradise to head back to Punta Cana for another adventure. As we departed, we couldn’t help but feel grateful for this perfect Saona Island excursion, a day trip that allowed us to experience the untouched natural wonders of this secluded paradise. The memories of Saona’s crystal blue waters, white sand beaches, and relaxing vibes would stay with us long after we returned home.
